REVIEW
Rating: 5 Stars
I rarely read contemporary romance, but I’m happy I read Love Under Construction. This is a sweet, faith-filled story filled with charming characters and touching themes.
The plot: Irelynn Brady and Quinton Gregory are thrust into the role of parenting Quinton’s orphaned, niece and nephew twins after their mom dies. Cue in the fact Irelynn and Quinton heartily dislike each other due to a past debacle (trust me, it’s not one of those cliche ones). Both characters have their struggles, which the author did well with spreading out through the book – there weren’t overwhelming problem dumps like what can happen in some contemporaries. Add in the mischievous twins and their equally-perhaps more so-mischievous great-grandmother, a group of scheming matchmaker wannabes, and other hilarious characters, and Love Under Construction treats the reader to a perfect blend of seriousness and hilariousness.
The settings: Chokecherry Heights is a growing town, and hosts a number of places mischief, shenanigans, and character growth take place in. The assisted living home was probably my favorite. I’ll leave it at that so as not to provide spoilers.
The characters: Irelynn has a lot on her shoulders, and while she does worry, understandably, at times, we get to see her faith in God grow and progress throughout the book. I admire how she loves the twins as if they were her own, and the sacrifices she makes to ensure they have what they need. Quinton is a great character as well. Battling his own struggles, he deals with losing all but three of his family members in a relatively short period of time. He is somewhat sarcastic with an oversized ego regarding his air hockey skills. Mom and Gram were awesome. We see how (Irelynn’s) Mom’s hard past has influenced her strong faith, and it’s touching to watch her help Irelynn through the tough times. Gram is Gram. A little Southern lady with an affinity for sweet tea and Uno, she leads a small group of other old ladies who believe themselves matchmakers. You’ll have to read the book to see the schemes these hilarious seniors cook up.
In summary, Love Under Construction is a sweet, faith-filled story filled with charming characters and touching themes.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
